Nature in all it's brilliance, mystery and sheer beauty can be witnessed from the grandest views, to the more intimate sightings. A macro view of our hike up Mt Cube in NH.
Nature in all it's brilliance.......realistically portrayed, and painted with some interpretation, it radiates life's beauty and wonder.

On one of our hikes through portions of Arches National Park, we took a spur trail to view the scenery at Partition Arch. We sat for quite awhile by ourselves, soaking in the view. It was a moment of contemplation, a moment I will always treasure.

While on our second hiking trip in Newfoundland, we came upon some beautiful root cellars. I was captivated by the shapes, the stone work, the doors. Regardless of their utilitarian function, the root cellars are very spiritual in their essence. Perhaps, given the harsh conditions of Newfoundland, the builders and users of these root cellars revered these spaces in a spiritual manner.....a manner that honored these root cellars for safe guarding the food that allowed them to survive.

This painting depicts my sister's beautiful garden and their lovely yard, which flows right onto the adjacent corn field. The garden yields an abundance of tasty organic vegetables that her family eats all year round. When we visit during the summer months, we're always loading a bag full of whatever is ready to harvest into our car. The shed, my nephews' soccer balls, and some of the landscaping represent the family members that helped create this haven. The love and edible bounty that's shared in Janine's garden.

Our last night in Canyonlands, UT, we decided to take the short hike on Murphy's Trail and sleep under the stars. Although it's only a couple of miles from the road, it was as if we were miles away from civilization. The peace and quiet and the vista were absolutely stunning. This painting depicts the view on the northern side of where we pitched our tent. Up before dawn making tea and oats to warm our chilled hands, we watched as the sun began to reveal the deep canyons. It was an incredible and majestic sight! I tried to capture the sense of the light dancing on the landscape at the start of that beautiful day.

My husband and I were hiking at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, March, 2013. The hike up to Kitchen Table was captivating and serene, but when we reached the top a storm began to brew. The winds were gusting to the extent that it was difficult to stand, and the thunder clapped at an increasing rate. So we scrambled back down and took shelter from the rain.
This painting depicts the view looking back across the valley to Kitchen Table from our hike up to Chimney Rock. The bold colors represent the vibrant energy that seems to illuminate the area even on a stormy day.

Years ago I spent weeks in the Four Corners region. I was stunned by the starkness and the beauty, but was emotionally connected in a deeper way to Ghost Ranch in New Mexico. Hiking up to Chimney Rock twenty three years later was sweetness tinged with a bit of sadness, for all the paths taken and not over the years. The sweet revelation in knowing that all the hardships and happiness we experience deepen our lives in profound ways. The emotions that I experienced hiking up to Chimney Rock were the inspiration for this painting. The motion in the rocks, and the landscape below, personifies the sensation of being held and being rocked, while negotiating the emotional self.

We had just arrived in Abiquiu, New Mexico at a small hotel where the owner suggested we take in a local hike to Plaza Blanca.
The entire place was at once eerie and incredibly soft and soothing. The large imposing, white structures of limestone soared over us. This painting represents a place near the end of our hike. The structures here reminded me of deities guarding and protecting the sacred space.
A side note: there were several movies shot at Plaza Blanca- Cowboys and Aliens, The Missing, and City Slickers to name a few.

A cold, snowy March day describes the morning we arrived at Mesa Verde in Colorado. We barely made it up into the park, the road down to one lane in parts due to the ice and drifting snow. This is a painting of Spruce Tree House, one of the largest cliff dwellings, dating back to 1200's AD. Although the weather was harsh, it was a blessing, as there were only two others visiting, allowing us a very private tour. I tried to capture the relationship that may have happened between the dwelling inhabitants and the ceremonies that were held in the Kiva. The air and the stone were cold, but I sensed a very lively, warm presence. A glimmer of what life here may have been like.
It's difficult for me to separate our pets from other family members. All the animals I've lived with play a pivotal, grand role in my life. As a result it's no wonder that I love to paint my animals as well as take on commissions from other people who adore their four legged family members. For as adoring pet owners know, the hardest aspect about living with animals, is that they don't live nearly long enough!

I enjoy being commissioned to paint a pet portrait. I spend enough time viewing my subject that it's as if they are speaking through me, directly onto the paper, or canvas. I'm transfixed, as I create a piece often from multiple images. When I'm finished it's as if I'm putting down a good book....it's hard to let it go.

Tug's eyes, the gate to the soul, seemed most appropriate to focus on in this painting. He was a beloved dog, and is sorely missed.
..........................................................................................................................................
Tug was only 5 when he was diagnosed with Lymphoma. When he passed away a few months later my wife and I were heartbroken. Your creation helped us heal. You so accurately captured the sparkle in his eyes, the joy in his smile and the magic of his heart and soul. Your beautiful painting sits on our mantle piece above our fireplace. It is the last thing I see before I leave for work each day, and the first thing I see when I come home each night. It never fails to make me smile, as it is a constant reminder of our beloved little boy, and of all the wonderful times we had together. In many ways, you brought him back to life for us. Thank you for using your gifts to create a truly inspiring one for us. We appreciate what you did, and will treasure and cherish it forever!

Fifth in the bear series. I've not seen a bear in the wild standing on two legs. Although I've watched plenty of videos, where a bear will stand on two legs and sniff the air, or rub a tree in order to leave scent marks. I would imagine it's an awesome sight to behold. I've only been in the woods with a bear once, although have come across bears while in my car many times.....but being on foot in the woods of Orford, NH and having a bear walk in my direction was a memorable event.
I titled this Bear Chi in honor of the Tai Chi class I've been taking, which has been immensely inspiring.

I felt a connection with this leopard at Sabi Sabi in South Africa. A sadness of sorts, because we were in its space, gawking, intruding, objectifying this majestic animal. Although the Ranger we were with assured me we were not in any way interfering with the leopard's sense of wellness, I felt a desire to leave it alone and retreat from the area. Perhaps that is why I chose the composition that I did for this piece. I wanted the viewer to be compelled by the leopard's eyes....to almost hear the information the leopard is trying to impart.

We live in an area of Vermont right below the Appalachian Trail, and surrounded by farmland. We see quite a lot of wildlife. On several occasions we have watched a canine, that bears a striking resemblance to a wolf. We have lots of coyotes, but this animal definitely is larger than any of the coyotes we've had on the property. I find all animals fascinating, but, like people, some appear more majestic than others.
The rock face was inspired by the pictures I took while hiking in the Abruzzo Mountains of Italy.

Our land, and the land bordering us, boasts open pastures as well as a varied wooded landscape, because of this we are lucky to have a variety of bird species. While I enjoy observing all the birds, the crows are particularly interesting to watch. This painting was done of a crow that landed on the iron stand I use for our bird feeders. I have a platform feeder, a hanging feeder and a suet feeder all on or hanging from this one stand. This crow figured out very quickly that if it hung upside down and relaxed it's wings it could eat from the suet feeder, without having to constantly flap to keep his balance.

I have an immense love and appreciation for the plants that I grow, that I share this planet with....the orchid that I painted provides us with continually blossoming flowers. It is so lovely, that to be present, even for one moment with our orchid, feels as if you are communicating with a higher being. It is at such particular moments that I feel a beautiful oneness with everything, a quieting of mind, body and spirit.

Mural for the Blue Sparrow Kitchen, a community cafe located in Norwich, VT.
This picture as well as subsequent photos are close ups of the mural. There is a lot going on, as I tried to represent the flora and fauna of the Connecticut River Valley in Fairlee, VT and Orford, NH.
This is a full view of the mural after installing it in the library at The Samuel Morey Elementary School in Fairlee, VT. It was commissioned by the art teacher, who wanted the mural to connect the students of SME with the Connecticut River, and the natural world in and around the river.
Close up of second panel and beginning of third panel. This mural was painted on Baltic Birch. I was unable to paint directly on the wall at the library because one of the walls is cinder block.
Image of the third and most of the fourth panels. The mural consisted of four 4'x6' sheets and two smaller sheets. Each panel was sealed and then coated with many layers of gesso, that had been smoothed between coats.
A portion of the fourth and fifth panels. The mural was painted with acrylic paints then sealed with a urethane made specifically for murals.
Image of the fifth and sixth panels. At the bottom of the panel is a note that I wrote to all the students, teachers, administrators, and others that make The Samuel Morey Elementary School a special place.
Book I painted with John Muir quote, to inspire young and old minds alike.
Letter to everyone that goes through the door at The Samuel Morey Elementary School.
In the summer of 2015, I was commissioned to do a mural at the Norwich Animal Hospital on Rt 5 in Wilder, VT. It was a fun process that took about seven weeks, as I worked between patients. The following photos are different shots of that same mural.
I'm often helping others out with fun projects. They range from logos, to beer and cider labels.
We are very fortunate to have a community bread oven near our home. Suzanne usually bakes bread there every Friday during the summer. This is a sign I made for her sandwich board to alert people passing by that she's got bread!
